Character Information

Name: Lotor

Canon: Voltron: Legendary Defender

Canon Point: The moment Lotor tries to move into the quintessence field after Allura rejects him

Age: 10,000+

History: The pro-Lotor(ish) version | The anti-Lotor version

Personality: Lotor wants to be a good person, but everything he has even been taught by the people surrounding him has gone against that desire. Where he respects people from all different backgrounds based on their merits rather than their birth, the Galra show him disdain for his Altean blood. Where he wants to rule in a way where he is loved, he was taught to use fear and brute force. He even wants to allow the conquered societies to rule themselves so long as they pledge loyalty Where he wants to be the Altean that can give up their life instead of killing the guardian of Oriande, he was taught ‘Victory or death’ and at least saw them as mutually exclusive- though being locked out of Oriande was enough of a blow to warrant reconsideration there. Even at the point where he is most seriously affected by quintessence, which takes your greatest desires and pushes them to the extreme, he still only talks about killing just the violent, authoritarian, Galra while ruling the remaining Alteans, where he is loved, while rejecting Allura whom had not only rejected his own feelings of love towards her, but also compared him to his father, Emperor Zarkon. It’s one of the few times we see Lotor lose any measure of control, and he loses it completely when told that he is just like Zarkon- because he has been working his whole life to be a better, a more compassionate, and a kinder person. What hits the hardest is that largely he has managed to be a better person than most people raised in the same environment could become.

That is not to say that he’s not without his flaws or darkness. His hands aren’t clean by a long shot, but he’s not the kind of person to dwell on regrets or to let his past hold him back. He hasn’t had the luxury of such a thing, not with Haggar and Zarkon likely constantly forcing him to choose between options that are all against his morals or be jailed- again- for treason. That doesn’t mean that he treats all his enemies kindly. We see him defeating Throk in battle, only to station him in the worst corner of the universe, have his own soldiers steal the item he assigned Throk to protect and allowed him to suffer through Haggar’s torturous interrogations while having his memories wiped by Narti. We can’t be sure that Lotor didn’t have good reason to do this to Throk, as most of what we know about him is how loyal he is to Emperor Zarkon. There is less room for explanation with his murder of Narti, but she was being used to spy on him by Haggar, and has some of the scariest supernatural abilities in the series including being able to erase and manipulate memories and even control the body of someone she is touching. It could be seen that he could not allow Haggar to have control over those abilities. He is also known to have possibly sacrificed an unknown number of alteans to further his research, though in canon we only see drained alteans in suspension, not dead ones, nor any evidence of dead ones. It is possible he is keeping them in suspension with the desire to restore them later, especially if Haggar demanded quintessence in exchange for the lives of the rest of the Alteans.

While Lotor is often shown as distant and calculating, as he grew closer to Team Voltron and Allura we get to see him show love and compassion as well, and we see him open his heart up to Allura. It is stated by the show’s creators that Lotor’s feelings towards Allura were real, meaning that Lotor can truly be gentle and caring towards someone else, even if he still struggles with actual trust, not telling Allura about all the abilities he was having her help him put into the Sincline ships. He even tries to give Allura a second chance at peace and communication, only to have her betray him more deeply.

He is also a very skilled man, showing a wide breadth of knowledge of both the liberal arts and the science fields. He is a skilled tactician and fighter as well. He doesn’t show much evidence of extreme pride in these skills; He is self-confident but he doesn’t often speak of his own abilities or achievements, nor does he seem to show off. In some ways he is very humble as well. For example, he didn’t want to even have a statue of himself installed in the trans-dimensional comet Altean colony he created for the surviving Alteans as a safe haven from the Galra Empire’s purge of their race. He did allow it, but when he began to take away some of the population to another colony (which was revealed to be the other comet where he was studying Altean quintessence), he had each and every one of those people’s names put on his monument so that they will always be remembered.

Abilities: Lotor is noted to have several abilities that straddle the line of mundane. His intellect is shown as being extremely high, and he has an encyclopedic knowledge of Altean culture and history, as well as a vast knowledge of general history and ancient legends.

He is also shown as being extremely hypermobile to the point of smooth dislocation and reduction of his joints with just the use of his own muscles.

He is also implied to have the best combat abilities among all the known characters, usually defeated defacto rather than by actually overpowering or outfighting him, both in hand-to-hand combat and while piloting. He’s also an amazingly skilled pilot, able to toy with the pilots of Voltron while fighting them.

In addition to his combat abilities he also shows abnormally high strength for someone of his stature, compared to the other Galra we see. We also know that the quintessence he was exposed to in utero was integrated into his DNA, giving him slow aging.

Strengths: Tactics, intelligence, self-control, skill in manipulation, cold decision making

Weaknesses: Zarkon, Honerva, quintessence, need for love, cold decision making

God/Shinki: God

Why?: Lotor is too much of a strong, independent will to be a Shinki, and Lugh is perfect for him. In canon he is already treated similarly in canon as a Warrior Hero God-Prince to the Alteans.

Top 3 Choices: Lugh (Lugus) (Celtic Mythology), Prometheus, Odin

God Type: As a God of Oaths, Arts, Law and Rulership, Lotor will respond to prayers seeking justice, punishing oath-breakers, and guiding rulers in a noble and heroic manner. He might not always endorse the most honourable path, but he does deeply value the lives and experiences of all others as well. Some choices rulers must make are easier than others, and he will not aid any who pray to him without a sincere desire to help their people and are willing to put the good of their people ahead of themselves- unless he finds reason to teach someone this lesson himself. He also will gladly respond to prayers helping people learn the talents needed to be a strong leader. Sometimes he sets up a test where he requires the person hoping to earn his aid in the arts and learning must prove themselves ready to sacrifice their own life in the pursuit of knowledge- much in the way he himself failed when facing the White Lion of Oriande.

Power: Voice of the King- Lotor's Shinki and the living will feel an incredibly strong compulsion to obey his orders, usually only able to resist if it is something entirely against their personality to do. This activates consciously. As implied, stronger willed people will be more successful in refusing him, and the more against someone’s nature a command is, the easier it is to resist. Lotor himself will not be terribly fond of the power, but will use it from time to time if something needs to get done and he does not have time to reason with a person. It is also possible that he might order a Shinki straying from the path and lying to him or otherwise blighting him to do something that will help them work on correcting their behaviour, for example, demanding that they tell him what it is they did. This also will only work with audio. If there is no audio involved in the communication it will have no effect.

Anything Else?: For his power, I wanted to make sure to leave wiggle room for adjusting using it for other players.
